Men's Basketball Wins at Olivet

Box Score

OLIVET, Mich. – Ty Horky scored a career-high 38 points as the Kalamazoo College men's basketball team rode some red-hot shooting Monday night to win at Olivet College, 98-92.

Horky's first make of the night gave the Hornets an 11-2 lead less than two minutes into the game and a Lukas Broadsword layup stretched the advantage to 50-36 with six minutes remaining in the half.

The home squad rallied, however, going on an 8-0 run to close the deficit to 50-44 with 3:58 remaining. Horky then proceeded to take over, scoring the Hornets' next seven points as K closed out the half with a 57-53 lead.

The beginning of the second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams trading the lead four times before Horky's jumper with 12:05 remaining in the game made the score 73-71 and gave the Hornets the lead back for good.

Horky's old-fashioned three-point play gave K a 93-81 lead with 4:57 left, but the home team rallied again, cutting the margin to 94-89 with 56 seconds remaining. A Broadsword put back off an offensive rebound and two Addison Atwater free throws sealed the deal, however, allowing the Hornets (5-14, 2-6 MIAA) to get on board the bus with a precious MIAA road win as cargo.

Horky eclipsed his previous career-high of 27 points, set Dec. 21 against North Central (Ill.), by making 14 of his 18 shots from the field, including 5-5 from distance and 5-8 from the charity stripe. He added three assists and a steal.

Four of his teammates scored in double figures, with DJ Courtney (13 points), Broadsword (12), Atwater and Gabriel Sharp (11 points apiece) all joining the party. Courtney had a team-high seven rebounds and shared honors with Broadsword with five assists apiece.

Kalamazoo shot a sizzling 67% overall from the field, making 36 of 54 attempts. Incredibly, the three-point shooting was even better, as the Hornets sank 15 of 22 shots from distance (68%). Olivet could not keep pace, setting from 48% overall (34-69) and 36% from beyond the arc (12-33).

Olivet outrebounded the Hornets 33-21, but Kalamazoo had the advantage in assists (23-20) and steals (5-4).

Next up for Kalamazoo is a rematch with Olivet on Wednesday. The Comets will invade Anderson Athletic Center with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
