KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team lost 7-2 to No. 8 University of Chicago in the Markin Center on Sunday.

Chicago led 2-1 after doubles. Sarah Woods and Jenna Riehl defeated Megan Tang and Helen Sdvizhkov 9-8(4) at No. 1 doubles for Kalamazoo's only doubles win. While not ranked as a doubles team, both Chicago players are ranked regionally in singles with Tang ranked No. 1 and Sdvizhkov ranked No. 2. Kalamazoo's Woods and Riehl are not ranked in doubles, but Woods is ranked No. 16 regionally in singles.

"Sarah and Jenna defeated a national championship qualifier from last year in doubles," said Kalamazoo Head Coach Mark Murphy. "It was a great match for them."

Kalamazoo had a narrow defeat at No. 3 doubles with Ania Latala and Olivia Bouchard falling 8-6 to Stephanie Lee and Jordan Appel. Lee and Appel are ranked No. 6 in the region in doubles.

Sarah Woods (No. 16 Central Region) earned Kalamazoo's only point in singles with a three-set win over Tang (No. 1 Central Region) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

"It was a great match at No. 1 singles and Tang's first loss in region in three years," Murphy said.

"Overall, it was a great weekend of Kalamazoo College tennis," Murphy added. "The men won three matches and the women played a good match against the No. 8 team in the country."

Kalamazoo returns to action in the Markin Center next Saturday, March 1 with another key regional contest. The Hornets (No. 15 Central Region) face Wheaton College (No. 17 Central Region) at 11 a.m.
