By Mitch Blankespoor

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team traveled to Van Andel Soccer Stadium on the campus of Hope College for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) game with the Flying Dutch. Hope scored the game-winning goal with a second to play in the first overtime to defeat the Hornets 4-3.

The Flying Dutch enjoyed an early advantage in shots and possession, but could not break through the Hornet defense. With the game several minutes from the halfway point, Hope broke the scoreless deadlock. In the 43rd minute, Hope senior Courtney Laux headed a cross past Kalamazoo sophomore goalkeeper Lucy Mailing from 10 yards out. Hope took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Kalamazoo was outshot 9-4 in the first half. Hornet freshman Madeleine Chilcote fired two of K's four shots in the first half. Neither hit target.

That would change in the second half. After Hope extended its lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute, Chilcote scored her first goal of the season, chipping Hope goalkeeper Lauren Kooy.

Not three minutes later, Chilcote scored her second of the game and season on a rocket shot from 20 yards out.

"Maddie [Chilcote] sparked our team offensively," Kalamazoo Head Coach Bryan Goyings said. "She created the first goal on her own with a great shot and used a great cross to finish the second."

The Hornets had a jump in their step with the game tied at 2-2. Kalamazoo's pressure paid off once again in the 83rd minute. Junior Bronte Payne's cross found the found the foot of freshman Paige Sambor whose shot found the side netting. Kalamazoo had its first lead of the game with 7:53 to play.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, they could not hold the lead. The Flying Dutch scored with 2:25 to play in regulation to force overtime.

In the golden-goal overtime period, Hope's Lindsey Bieri broke through K's defense and scored the game-winning goal with a second to play.

Hope outshot K 20-9 in the 100 minute contest. Mailing was credited with six saves.

"I give Hope credit for sending the game into overtime, but we beat ourselves tonight," Goyings said. "We showed great fight despite being down 2-0. We have many positives to take away from tonight's game."

Kalamazoo falls to 4-6-0 on the season and 3-4-0 in the MIAA. The Hornets returns to action Saturday, Oct. 2, when they travels to Scotland Yard for a noon game with Alma.
