GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team outlasted Calvin University in 13 innings Wednesday, completing a game that was started in Grand Rapids on April 1 in a 10-6 victory.
The Hornets used small ball to push across a run in the third inning without the ball leaving the infield, with Clay Cook scoring after his infield single to lead off the inning. Kalamazoo scored a pair in the seventh on RBI singles by Ryar Rinehart and Caleb Moore to make it 3-0.
After Carson Merritt (2 IP) and Robert Ahlgren (5 IP) no-hit Calvin through the first seven innings, the Knights finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth for four runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Rinehart walked to lead off the ninth for the Hornets before Cam Kelly pinch ran and came around to score on an error to tie the game 4-4, where the score remained until the game was suspended due to darkness ahead of the 12th inning.
When the game resumed, both teams once again failed to score in the 12th, but Kalamazoo exploded for six runs in the top of the 13th to grab a 10-4 lead as Alex Fenkell hit a sacrifice fly to break the tie, and Logan Lockhart added a two-run double to add insurance one batter later.
Calvin got two runs back in the bottom half, but couldn't rally back. The Hornets outhit the Knights, 18-7, in the win.
Moore led Kalamazoo with five hits in the game, while Lockhart had two doubles in a three-hit effort. Owen Schihl (3-0) earned the win with five innings of relief around the suspension, allowing two runs and striking out six.
Ahlgren struck out 13 batters in his five-plus innings, coming just one short of the single-game record for the Hornets.
Kalamazoo (23-2, 7-0) hosts Calvin University (9-17, 0-7) Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Woodworth Field.
