KALAMAZOO, Mich.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team used a 10-run fourth inning to charge to an 18-8 victory in seven innings over Calvin University Wednesday at Woodworth Field.
Calvin scored three runs in the top of the first. Ryar Rinehart clobbered a two-run home run in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After the Knights added one in the top of the fourth, the Hornets exploded for 10 runs in the bottom half on six hits, two walks, two hit batters and two Calvin errors to jump ahead, 12-4.
Kalamazoo added two runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings around a four-run top of the seventh for the Knights to earn the run-rule victory.
Alex Fenkell led the Hornets with three hits, scoring three runs. Cade Preissing also scored three runs, while Rinehart and Jack Friesen both drove in three.
Carson Merritt threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen before Ben Van Nes (4-0) took the victory by throwing the fourth inning, collecting one strikeout. Gabe Sokol and Eric Sheppard also threw one scoreless inning each for Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo (24-2, 8-0) is at home again to face Adrian College (18-6, 6-2) Friday at 4 p.m. at Woodworth Field.
