CALEDONIA, Mich.– The #8 Kalamazoo College baseball team split a doubleheader against Hope College Friday at Davenport University. The Hornets took game one, 15-7, but the Flying Dutchmen bounced back to win game two, 5-1.
Game One – Kalamazoo 15, Hope 7
The Hornets scored in each of the first six innings, leading 10-1 after five and 12-4 through six innings. Hope fought back, scoring two in the seventh and one in the eighth, but Kalamazoo pulled back away with three in the bottom of the eighth to cap off the scoring.
Cade Preissing, Robert Newland and Caleb Moore collected two hits each for the Hornets. Five different players scored two runs for Kalamazoo, while Newland had a team-high four RBIs and Mikey DeLuca had a three-RBI triple in the second.
Carson Orvis (5-0) earned the win throwing five innings, allowing six hits and one walk for four unearned runs with five strikeouts. Cole Bronoel-Cuthrell added two and two-thirds innings in relief allowing one unearned run with four strikeouts.
Game Two – Hope 5, Kalamazoo 1
The Flying Dutchmen scored two runs in the second and two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Kalamazoo scored a run on a pair of errors in the bottom of the fourth.
Hope added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth to cap off the scoring.
Robert Ahlgren (4-1) took the loss in spite of a record-breaking performance on the mound, setting a new program record with 15 strikeouts in a single game.
Kalamazoo (27-4, 11-2) and Hope finish the series Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Caledonia, Mich.
