KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team took down Albion College Saturday in the Hornets' Senior Day and Homecoming Game, 2-0. The win clinched a top-3 place in the MIAA for Kalamazoo, with the Hornets having a chance to earn a first-round bye in the tournament in the season finale.
In a pregame ceremony, Kalamazoo honored seniors Callie Abair, Izzy Kastel, Kate Klahorst, McKinley Hanninen, Ruby Hogan and Savannah Norman.
The Hornets struck first in the 31st minute. Sawyer Lenon lofted the ball into the box where Hogan headed it towards the goal. An Albion player deflected it away, but Maeve Nolan was right there to fire the loose ball into the back of the net.
On a corner kick in the 44th minute, Nolan delivered a great ball right to the goal front, where Hogan sent a header back towards the right post and Madie Miller tapped it in to make it 2-0 Kalamazoo.
The Hornets' defense held onto the lead throughout the second half as Jess Forbis made seven saves to pick up her seventh shutout of the season. Kalamazoo outshot the Britons, 20-16 overall and 11-9 in shots on goal, with six corner kicks for both teams.
Kalamazoo (12-3-1, 6-1 MIAA) heads to Hope College (9-3-2, 5-0-1) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Holland, Mich. for the regular season finale. The Hornets have clinched a home game in the MIAA Tournament for the second straight season, to be played either next Saturday, Oct. 31, if they finish third, or Wednesday, Nov. 4 if Kalamazoo can earn a top-two finish in the conference.
