KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College football team cruised to a 50-7 win over Bethany College in the home opener Saturday afternoon at Angell Field.
The Hornets are now 2-0 on the season.
Kalamazoo got on the board just 3:37 into the game when
Dawson Skupin hit
Lucas Hanifan for a 23-yard strike.
Eddie Langton's extra point gave the Hornets a 7-0 advantage. An 11-play, 50-yard drive that took 5:21 put the home squad on the seven-yard line. Langton converted the 24-yard field goal for a 10-0 margin with 3:35 to go in the first frame.
After forcing a punt, Kalamazoo took over possession at the 18-yard line. On first-and-20 after a holding call, Skupin found Hanifan for a 58-yard pass, moving the ball to the 21-yard line. Moments later, Skupin connected with
Aaron Zekman for a six-yard touchdown. The ensuing extra point pushed the margin to 17-0.
A 30-yard scamper by Skupin and a five-yard pass to Zekman extended the lead to 29-0 with 5:12 to play in the half. However, after forcing another punt, Kalamazoo put together a quick-strike scoring drive. It consisted of just four plays while covering 65 yards – the last 55 came on a pitch-and-catch from Skupin to
Landon Russell, for the touchdown. Skupin completed the first-half scoring on a six-yard pass to Hanifan as the home squad led 43-7 at the break.
Kalamazoo continued adding to the lead in the third as
Brayden Ledin hit
Josh Anderson II for a 21-yard strike, completing a 10-play, 65-yard drive.
Skupin led the way with 382 yards through the air on 22-of-27 passing with five touchdowns.
Brayden Ledin completed six passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Hanifan secured eight catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Anderson had seven receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Zekman hauled in six catches for 75 yards and two scores.
Kyler Maiorana had 16 carries for 81 yards. Skupin rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively,
Tommy Kartes and
Nolan Jannenga led the way with six tackles apiece. Jannenga had three sacks.
Marcus Pedde,
Corey Garrison II and
Zach Sykes each had a sack in the dominant victory.
The Hornets registered 31 first downs and amassed 636 yards of total offense, including 501 through the air. Bethany was limited to 42 yards on 39 plays.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday when they host Anderson at 6 p.m.
