CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Kalamazoo College baseball team defeated Elmhurst, 14-4, and Illinois Tech, 10-0, on Sunday. The Hornets have now won nine consecutive games and have scored 10 or more runs in the last six games.
Game One – Kalamazoo 14, Elmhurst 4 (8 inn.)
Kalamazoo led 2-1 after the first inning, 4-2 after three, and 7-4 after four. After a scoreless fifth and sixth, Kalamazoo added one in the seventh and six in the top of the eighth to go up 14-4. Elmhurst was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game with the 10-run rule.
Kalamazoo outhit Elmhurst 18-7.
David Stechow went 5-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
Tanner Hawkins was 4-for-6 with a double and four runs scored.
Caleb Moore finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Ryar Rinehart had two hits, a triple and a home run, with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Cade Preissing also had two hits.
Chase Cummins,
Ben Van Nes,
Steven Shelton, and
Eric Sheppard combined for the win. Shelton and Sheppard combined for three scoreless innings. Van Nes struck out five in two innings.
Game Two – Kalamazoo 10, Illinois Tech 0 (7 inn.)
Kalamazoo scored three in the first, one in the second, and four in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. The Scarlet Hawks were held to four hits and zero runs in the 10-run rule shortened game.
Kalamazoo finished with nine hits in the game.
Caleb Moore had two hits including a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored.
Alex DiDio had two hits including a triple and two RBIs.
Ryar Rinehart doubled and drove in a run.
Carson Orvis earned the win with the shutout, striking out nine and walking none while allowing just four hits.
