Softball Splits with UW-Platteville and Lawrence

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Kalamazoo College softball team split a doubleheader with UW Platteville and Lawrence on Monday afternoon. Kalamazoo fell to UW Platteville 4-0 before defeating Lawrence 8-5 in nine innings.

The Hornets are now 6-4 on the season.

Game One vs UW-Platteville, L, 4-0

Wisconsin Platteville struck early, plating two runs in the first inning off an RBI single followed by an RBI double. The Pioneers added another in the third and a final insurance run in the seventh, to claim the 4-0 victory.

Kalamazoo was held to just two hits compared to UW Platteville's 10.

Macy Ward went 1-2 with a double, while Ella Neumann went 1-3.

Maddy Vrba pitched a complete game for the Hornets, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out three. Vrba now holds a 2-2 record on the mound.

 
Game Two vs Lawrence, W, 8-5 (9 innings)

After a scoreless first five innings, the Hornets exploded in the sixth, putting four runs on the board to take the lead.

Landrie Fridsma capitalized on a Lawrence fielding error, reaching third base while bringing in Brenna Fisher. Jordan Wesaw followed with a double to left field, scoring Fridsma. Macy Ward added to the rally with a sacrifice fly to drive in Wesaw. Ella Neumann capped off the inning with an RBI single to right field, bringing home Emma Newlove for a 4-0 advantage.

Lawrence responded back immediately, putting up four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Both teams went scoreless until the ninth inning when Emma Newlove scored on a passed ball to give the Hornets a 5-4 lead in extra innings. Fridsma kept the momentum going with a two-run RBI triple to center field, sending Fisher and Lily Evans across the plate. Wesaw hit her second double of the game, driving in Fridsma and extending the lead to 8-4.

Lawrence managed to add one run in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't complete the comeback.

Brenna Fisher led the Hornets offensively, going 3-5 with two runs. Jordan Wesaw was 2-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Landrie Fridsma, Emma Newlove, Ella Neumann, Maddie Potts, and Lily Evans each recorded a hit.

In the circle, Maddie Potts secured the win, allowing just one hit and one run within four innings.

The Hornets return to action tomorrow, wrapping up their spring break trips with matchups against Luther (10:00 a.m.) and UW-Platteville (12:30 p.m.)
