KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team began postseason play with a 4-1 MIAA Tournament win over Alma on Wednesday (May 8). The No. 1-seeded Hornets improve their record to 30-9 and advance to the winner's bracket, while the No. 4-seeded Scots drop to 24-17 and head to the loser's bracket. This is the third time in program history that Kalamazoo has eclipsed 30 wins and the first time in back-to-back seasons.
Scoring Plays
Kalamazoo struck first in the bottom of the second inning with three runs. The bases were loaded after a pitch hit Robert Newland, Tanner Hawkins walked, and Lukas Bolton laid down a bunt single. Logan Lockhart drew a walk to bring in the first run, and Cooper Mills singles to center field for two RBI.
Alma cut into the Hornet lead with one run in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly. Kalamazoo got the run back and added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning when Lockhart laid down a safety squeeze bunt to bring in Hawkins.
Pitching
Jacob Davis (7-2) escaped jams in the second and fourth innings and allowed just one run on four hits and a walk in seven innings with five strikeouts.
Brenden Oprinski came on for the two-inning save (7) by allowing just one base runner on a walk with a strikeout.
Hitting
Cooper Mills went 4-5 with two RBI and a stolen base. Logan Lockhart also picked up two RBI with a walk. Robert Newland was on base three times with a hit, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Lukas Bolton and Tanner Hawkins each had a hit and drew a walk.
