KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kalamazoo College lost a 37-14 decision Saturday afternoon to Trine to close out the regular season.
The Hornets conclude the season with a record of 4-6, including 1-6 in MIAA action. The Thunder stand at 6-4 overall, including 4-3 in league play.
Trailing 7-0 late in the first quarter, Kalamazoo started the drive at the 20-yard line. On third-and-eight,
Josh Nichols found
Jonah Spates for an 11-yard gain. Nichols hit
Lucas Hanifan for nine more yards on the ensuing play. On third-and-one, Nichols connected with
Nate Clark for 13 yards, moving the ball to the 45-yard line. A 45-yard strike to Hanifan on first-and-10 made it 7-6. The extra point by
Emory Roberts knotted the score with 2:06 to play in the first quarter.
Trine would find the endzone three times in the second quarter for a 28-7 edge at the break.
In the third frame, an interception by the visitors was negated due to a penalty, giving Kalamazoo a first-and-five.
Conner Bell's two-yard rush moved the chains. On second-and-14, Nichols connected with Bell for six yards. After a seven-yard pass to
Tyler Houle, Nichols rushed for a first down. On the play, a personal foul penalty was whistled on Trine, setting up first-and-five on the five. Bell completed the drive with a touchdown run. Roberts' kick cut the deficit to 28-14 after completing the 11-play, 73-yard drive.
The Thunder added a touchdown in the third quarter before tacking on a safety in the final quarter for the 37-14 final score.
Nichols hit 19-of-33 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown for the Hornets. Hanifan hauled in nine catches for 120 yards. He caught the touchdown pass from Nichols. Clark caught three passes for 23 yards while Bell and
Jacques James each caught multiple passes.
On the ground, Bell led the way with 12 attempts for 93 yards and a score.
Defensively,
Raymond Cargill led the defense with 13 total tackles, including eight assisted.
Carson Deines accounted for 12 tackles, including a team-best six solo stops. Deines,
Dillon Gacki and Kamani Jones Jr., all had a tackle for loss.
Cargill, Gacki,
Bryce Balabuch and
Nolan Jannenga were each in on sacks.
Omarion Hall,
Jackson Mitchell and
Brandon Speed all had a pass break-up.
The contest was Senior Day for the Hornets.
