Football Falls in Season Finale at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College football team lost its season finale 42-29 at Trine University Saturday afternoon.

Trine scored the first three touchdowns of the game before Kalamazoo got on the board with 38 seconds left in the first to make it 21-7. Trine returned the kickoff 97 yards for a score to go up 28-7. The Hornets scored with 8:30 left in the second to make it 28-14, but a Trine touchdown with 2:53 remaining made it a 35-14 game heading into halftime.

Kalamazoo cut the deficit to 14 points (35-21) with 32 seconds left in the third. The Thunder put the game out of reach with a touchdown with 3:19 left in regulation. Kalamazoo scored with 55 seconds left leading to the 42-29 final.

Kalamazoo put up 420 yards of total offense compared to 401 by Trine. 

Josh Nichols was 35-of-54 passing for 325 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Nichols also rushed for a touchdown.

Jon Brunette rushed for 35 yards on eight carries. He also threw a touchdown pass to Sam Hughes.

Jonah Spates had 171 yards on 12 catches. Lucas Hanifan had 101 yards on 10 catches.

Hughes caught two touchdown passes. Conner Bell also had a touchdown reception.

Madison Barch was 3-for-3 on extra points. She also caught a pass for a two-point conversion following Kalamazoo's last touchdown with 44 seconds left in the game. With the conversion, Barch became the first known female player in NCAA history to score non-kicking points.

Adam Stapleton led the Hornet defense with 11 tackles and a sack. Brenden Moat and Carson Deines each had seven tackles.

Brandon Speed and Alex Pepin each had an interception.

Kalamazoo finished the season with a 5-5 overall record.
