KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 24-21 win over Kenyon College at Angell Field on Saturday.

Kenyon took a 7-0 lead with a touchdown late in the first quarter. 

Kalamazoo evened the score at 7-7 on Sheldon Riley's 10-yard run early in the second quarter. The Hornets pulled ahead 10-7 on Ian Burr's 26-yard field goal with 6:18 left in the second quarter.

Kenyon made it a 14-10 game on a 50-yard touchdown pass just 57 seconds later.

Kalamazoo's Nate Clark found the end zone on a 2-yard pass from Josh Nichols with 36 seconds left in the half to give the Hornets a 17-14 lead.

Bubba Wilson took a Nichols' pitch 73 yards for a score just over three minutes into the third quarter.

Kalamazoo held the lead until late in the fourth when Kenyon scored on a 1-yard run with 2:45 remaining. Nichols recovered the onside kick for the Kalamazoo, and the Hornets ran out the clock to end the game.

Kenyon put up 488 yards of total offense compared to 266 yards by Kalamazoo. The Hornets maintained possession for 32:27 compared to 27:33 by Kenyon.

An interception by Gabe Meyers at the goal line early in the fourth quarter, and returned just past midfield, was a key play on defense for the Hornets.

Josh Nichols finished 15-of-29 passing for 219 yards with two touchdowns.

Bubba Wilson had four catches for 98 yards with a score. Jonah Spates (38 yards), Lance Taylor (25), Nate Clark (23), Hunter Kiesling (22) and Conner Bell (8) each had two receptions, with Clark scoring late in the first half.

Sheldon Riley rushed for 79 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown. Conner Bell had 46 yards on 11 carries. Nichols had 32 yards on 15 carries.

Carson Deines led the Hornet defense with 12 total tackles. Jake Robertson and Brenden Moat each had eight.

Andrew Puckett had a sack, while Gabe Meyers had the big interception return of 51 yards.

Kalamazoo is back in action next Saturday, Sept. 17 at Defiance College at 1:30 p.m.
