Football drops season opener at Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College football team lost its season opener 29-14 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday.

Kalamazoo scored on its third possession when Alex White connected with Collin Feilla on an 8-yard touchdown pass.

The Hornet defense got off to a great start in the game, forcing and recovering fumbles on Rose-Hulman's first three possessions.

Kalamazoo made it 14-0 with 6:59 left in the first as White again found Feilla in the end zone on a 2-yard scoring play.

The host Engineers scored three minutes later to make it a 14-7 game. Rose-Hulman was able to add a safety with 1:10 left in the second quarter, but the Hornets made a stop on the 2-yardline at the end of the half to keep the score at 14-9.

Rose-Hulman finally took a lead (15-14) with a touchdown late in the third quarter (2:26). The Engineers proceeded to build up the lead with long touchdowns in the fourth quarter leading to the 29-14 final.

Rose-Hulman totalled 456 yard of offense while limiting Kalamazoo to 203 yards. 

Alex White was 11-of-46 passing for 99 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

K.J. Schultz made three catches for 50 yards. Collin Feilla made six catches for 35 yards including the two touchdowns.

Shon Powell led the ground game with 65 yards on 17 carries. Clay Wilkey added 18 yards on six carries while White rushed for 17 yards on nine carries.

Octavius Sanders and Quentin Sweeney each made 11 tackles to lead the defense. Dylan Zerki was credited with 10 total tackles. Hartlee Lucas made seven tackles while recovering two fumbles.

Kalamazoo travels to Millikin University next Saturday. The Big Blue defeated Greenville College 34-16 today.
