Volleyball opens season at Bluffton Tournament

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team opened the 2017 season at the Sommer Center Spiketacular hosted by Bluffton University on Friday.

Kalamazoo won the first two sets against Wheaton in the opener before dropping the final three and the match (25-19, 25-19, 11-25, 23-25, 11-15).

Maria Katrantzi led the Hornets with 12 kills. Sophia Goebel added 11 kills while Rachel Girard and Shelby Suseland each had 10. 

Kaiya Herman-Hilker recorded 42 assists with 10 digs. Taylor Ferguson led the team with 20 digs while Vanessa Vigier had 13.

Kalamazoo lost the second match of the night 3-0 to defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Hanover College.

Katrantzi again led the attack with seven kills. Vigier and Suseland each had five while Girard finished with four.

Herman-Hilker tallied 34 assists while Zoey Ammon added 15. Ferguson led the way with 18 digs.

Kalamazoo returns to action Saturday with matches against DePauw (12 p.m.) and Bluffton (4 p.m.).
