2018 MIAA Tournament Preview: Women's Soccer

The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team will be heading back to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association post season tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Entering MIAA play with a 5-2-1 record, the Hornets went on to go 4-4 in the conference to secure the sixth seed in the conference tournament.

The Tournament Match Ups

The MIAA tournament is a single-elimination style tournament scheduled to play October 27 and 31, with the finals taking place on Saturday, November 3.

October 27

Game #1 - #5 Olivet (8-8-2, 4-4-0) at #4 Albion (7-8-2, 4-3-1) – 4 p.m. (Albion, Mich.)

Game #2 - #6 Kalamazoo (9-6-2, 4-4-0) at #3 Calvin (9-4-3, 4-2-2) – 7 p.m. (Grand Rapids, Mich.)

October 31

Game #3 – G-1 Winner at #1 Hope (13-1-2, 7-0-1) – 7 p.m. (Holland, Mich.)

Game #4 – G-2 Winner at #2 Adrian (11-5-1, 7-1-0) – 7 p.m. (Adrian, Mich.)

November 3

Game #5 – G-3 Winner vs G-4 Winner – TBD

Who to Watch

Junior Libby Munoz is on a goal scoring tear yet again this season. The forward from Leland, Mich. is tied for the lead in the MIAA with 12 goals this season. Munoz is also second in the league in points with 26.

There have been a pair of Hornets regularly setting up Munoz and co. on goal scoring opportunities this season. Sophomore Joy Hunziker is tied for the MIAA lead in assists this season at seven. Freshman Kai Ketola is not far behind with six.

The Kalamazoo defense has been led by goalie Hannah Wolfe this season. Wolfe, a sophomore from West Bloomfield, Mich., has the second best save percentage in the MIAA at .851, is third in saves with 97 and has the fourth best goals-against average at 0.97.

Recent History

Even with losses this season, the Hornets have knocked off each of the five MIAA Tournament opponents in the last two seasons. Though the Hornets were only 1-4 against these opponents, they only allowed eight total goals in the five matches. Kalamazoo defeated #4 seed Albion 3-1 this season.

MIAA Awards

Senior Sarah George and Junior Libby Munoz were named to the All-MIAA First Team on Friday. George has been honored as a part of the Second Team in each of the last two seasons. This marks the second straight season that Munoz has been named to the First Team.
