The Deal Award recognizes graduating male seniors who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership in their respective communities. The award honors former MIAA Commissioner Albert L. Deal, who served the conference in that capacity from 1971 to 1991.
"We had many outstanding senior student-athletes this past year in the MIAA. Will Guedes' accomplishments as a diver and in the classroom set him apart from the other student-athletes we considered," MIAA Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook said.
A native of Brasilia, Brazil, and graduate of John Adams High School in South Bend, Ind., Guedes was a five-time All-American in swimming and diving.during his career with the Hornets and a three-time All-MIAA selection.
Guedes was the MIAA champion in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving in 2013 and again this year, earning conference Most Valuable Diver honors both years. He won the NCAA Division III national championship in 1-meter diving in 2013, finished fifth on the 1-meter board in 2012, and placed fifth in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving at this year's NCAA championships. He was a member of MIAA champion teams in both 2012 and 2013, and was the NCAA Division III Diver of the Year in 2013.
Guedes will graduate Sunday, June 14 from Kalamazoo with a degree in computer science, and currently holds a 3.77 grade point average. He has twice been named to the Capital One Academic All-America at-large team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He was a first-team Academic All-America selection in 2013 and was this week named to the Academic All-America second team. He has been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and has twice received Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
Outside the pool, Guedes was active in campus organizations. He was a founding member of Kalamazoo's Fellowship of Christian Students, leading and organizing weekly activities as well as mission and disaster relief trips. He also served on the college's Student Commission, serving on its financial policies committee, where he helped to allocate the spending of student activity fees.
Will Guedes is the son of Wilson Guedes & Katia Teles of Brasilia, Brazil. He is the third Kalamazoo College student-athlete to receive the award (Brandon Luczak 2010, Mark Ghafari 2014).
