Amanda Moss '19 Reflects on Kalamazoo College Experience

Amanda Moss '19 had a double bonus this month, celebrating her new job and birthday on the same day.

She started in a full-time rotational position at National Football League headquarters in New York City. Her first rotation is in the International Media & Business Development department where she focuses on the NFL's core international markets to expand through media deals, partnerships, and grassroots initiatives.

The position is a perfect fit for Moss, (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Bloomfield Hills High School) who was a two-sport standout at K. In her senior basketball season she was second in scoring (9.1 average) and steals (40), and third in assists (30) and 3-pointers (15). In lacrosse, she led the team in assists all four years and was named to the Jewish Sports Review All-America Team in 2018. She holds the school record with five assists in a game, 20 assists in a season (2018) and career assists (55). Her 164 career points is also a K lacrosse record.

"Participating in athletics at K allowed me to assume different leadership roles both on and off the field and court," Moss said.

"From those different leadership roles, I learned the value of teamwork, humility, and communication, all of which have brought me to the next step in my life."

Her internships and Senior Individualized Project prepared her for her career.

She worked with the Detroit Pistons in the Community Relations and Marketing department.

"I discovered that the Pistons were lacking young girls ages 9-16 in their fan base," Moss said. "I presented this information to management and then was given the funds to organize and host an event catered toward this age group."

With Sports Beijing, she worked with the group's magazine and also coached the Chinese youth basketball and lacrosse programs.

That led to her Senior Individualized Project, "Comparing American and Chinese Consumer Perceptions of Professional Sports' Leagues Brand Equity." 

"I acquired grant money from the Business Department at K and the Center for International Programs to travel to Shanghai, China, to conduct research for 11 days," she said. "I distributed identical surveys (in English and Mandarin) to citizens of the United States and China to understand their perceptions of the National Basketball Association, National Football League, and English Premier League."

At her third internship, in the NBA's league office, she was in the Global Partnerships department working on multiple projects relating to the business side of basketball.

"My time at the NBA not only allowed me to work on multiple projects relating to the business of basketball, but it also allowed me to meet a number of intelligent and intellectually curious people," she said.

Looking back over her time at K, Moss said, "I would like to thank my Dad and step mom, Jenni, for their endless support these last four years. I could not have done any of this without those two."
