CLAREMONT, Calif. – Kalamazoo women's tennis sophomore Sarah Woods will begin play in the NCAA III Women's Tennis Individual Championships Thursday, May 22 against Kara Shoemaker of Williams College. The match is scheduled to begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. EST and will be played at the Biszantz Tennis Center on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripts.
Woods, who reached the round of 16 in the tournament in 2013, is ranked fifth in the Central Region by itatennis.com. Woods tallied a 19-4 record this season including a 15-2 mark at first singles. Woods was also named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year.
Shoemaker, the top-ranked player in the Northeast Region by itatennis.com, has played first singles for Williams the last two seasons. The Ephs finished second in the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) to rival Amherst.
As a team, Kalamazoo won the MIAA regular season title but fell to Hope in the MIAA Tournament finals. Williams, seeking its seventh consecutive NCAA III Women's Tennis National Championship, lost to Amherst in the national semifinals.
The winner of the match will meet the winner of Angela Pratt of Carnegie Mellon and Andrea Hammer of Chapman.
