LEESBURG, Fla. - The Kalamazoo College softball team got off to a great start on its spring trip by winning a pair of games on opening day Thursday. The Hornets defeated Lake Forest, 5-4, before shutting out UMass Boston, 8-0.
The first game with Lake Forest went back-and-forth before Kalamazoo took a 3-2 lead after three innings. Lake Forest added a run in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to regain the lead by one. Kalamazoo threatened in the sixth, but couldn't score the runner from third. Still down by one in the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets started the inning with a pair of singles. A fielders choice that did not result in an out loaded the bases for Isabella Kick who doubled to right center to drive in the tying and game-winning run.
Kalamazoo scored four runs in the first inning of game two en route to the 8-0 win over UMass Boston.
Hayleigh Alamo doubled to drive home to runs in the first while Nori Seita followed up with a two-run homer leading to the four runs. The Hornets added three runs in the fourth and another run in the seventh while playing solid defense to preserve the shutout.
Alamo finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Seita finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Erin DuRoss scattered eight hits over seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Hornets return to action Friday with a pair of games beginning at 9 a.m.
