Mark Ghafari leads Hornets with 15 points in exhibition at WMU

The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 93-50 at NCAA Division I Western Michigan University in exhibition play on Thursday.

Western scored the first 14 points of the game while keeping the Hornets scoreless through the first five minutes. Kalamazoo battled back, however, and outscored Western 17-4 over the next five minutes to trail by just one point (18-17) with 10:22 left in the first half.

Kalamazoo would not getting any closer, however, as the Broncos began to pull away and used a 6-0 run to close out the half with a 44-26 lead.

Western gradually extended the lead throughout the second half en route to the victory.

Western shot 49.3 percent overall compared to 25.4 percent for Kalamazoo. The Hornets sank 8-of-33 three-pointers compared to 4-of-23 for the Broncos. Western converted 23-of-36 free throws while Kalamazoo sank 8-of-12.

The taller Western squad held a decisive advantage in rebounding, 63-34.

Mark Ghafari led Kalamazoo with 15 points and four rebounds while making 4-of-9 three-pointers. Eric Fishman added eight points with four rebounds. Adam Peters scored six points while Carl Ghafari and Cam Schwartz each added five points off the bench.

Kalamazoo's season opener is scheduled for Nov. 24 against Manchester College (at Earlham).
